The easiest way to grow hazelnuts is to buy young plants – or immature root pots – from a nursery. These plants grow if they have plenty of nutrients and are planted in direct sunlight. 2- Make a hole that is twice the size of the root:

Young hazelnut plants need a lot of loose soil to spread their roots. So, if your root ball is 20cm in diameter, dig a hole 41cm wide and 41cm deep. Also, use your shovel or trowel to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole, so the roots can grow downward.

3- The distance between single hazelnut bushes is at least 6 meters:

Plant at least 2 plants, as the plants will fertilize each other and a plant planted separately will not have nuts. Individual plants have plenty of room to grow – but don't space them more than 12 meters apart, or they won't be able to pollinate.

4- Wait 5-7 years until the plants give nuts:

Typically, hazelnut bushes take 3-4 years to grow to mature size, and an additional 2-3 years are required to begin bearing nuts. During this period, you do not need to water the bushes, because hazelnuts are very resistant to dry conditions.

As part of caring for hazelnut bushes during these years, remove all excess young shoots that emerge from the base of the trunk and roots. After 5-7 years, you can expect to see hazelnuts forming in late spring.

5- In the autumn months, harvest hazelnuts by removing the rough skin:

Each hazelnut grows in a cluster called a cob that contains 1-12 nuts. In autumn, the skins turn brown, indicating that they are ready to harvest. Remove the skins from the bushes and collect them in a bucket or basket. Then, separate them by making holes and let the nuts inside come out. In most cases, gravity should be enough to pull the nuts out of the hole.

6- Dry the nuts in newspaper for 3-4 days:

Once you remove the nuts from the hole, they need time to dry. Place them on a newspaper on a flat surface, such as a table or a clean floor. Make sure to place the nuts in a place where they will not be disturbed by children and pets while drying. Once the nuts are dry, you can roast them or store them. Store hazelnuts in an airtight container in your pantry. (Unroasted hazelnuts are unpleasant to eat.)
